Mana/Porirua Palmerston North Swim Camp – January 2009

The Mana/Porirua 2009 Squad Training Camp is complete and what a camp it was this year!  Coaches Nevill Sutton and Todd O’Hagan worked the swimmers hard and this speaks loudly of the commitment of both coaches and swimmers to the training programme.  The distances swum ranged from 50km - 70km with the training programme peaking on Wednesday with the top seniors training for 4½-hours.  The Juniors/Orcas worked on technique and drills.

Thanks to Matt Trlin’s ground work the camp ran smoothly without any headaches and once again the PNBHS (Palmerston North Boy’s High School) pool and College House facilities were superb.

All swimmers were placed into teams and Sunday’s night activity invited the teams to come up with a team T-shirt, name, slogan and chant which could reflect the coming together of Mana and Porirua.  The Sharks/Seniors started on this activity with the Juniors/Orcas joining in when they arrived on Tuesday.  Thursday Night was the presentation of the T-shirts and the thought that went into concepts and designs were well thought through and dynamic.  Concepts and names included: - Cyclone Swim Club, Arena Aquatic Swimco, Two Tides Aquatics, Porirua City Aquatics (PCA).

Paintball on Monday was a real success; the movies were popular as was cricket; especially if you had Tania in your team. The straw construction activity was won by Team 1, while Team 3 took out The ice cream eating competition, orienteering and team relays.  Team 2 won the point competition and boys versus girls relays were won by the boys.

Thursday night was the Paper, Scissors, Rock competition.  It became an all male final with Matariki, Team 3 challenging the adult winner Nevill in a fast and furious competition, with Nevill eventually taking the main title.

Swimmer of the day was awarded for the am and pm sessions winners including; Alex, Steph, Jono, Kahu, Hinewaka, Bronagh, Lizzy, Katherine B, Natasha, Holly, and Matariki.  The all round swimmers of the week for attitude both in and out of the pool were Jonathan Hunter- Seniors/Sharks and Josh Walsh - Juniors/Orcas. A big thank you to the prizes donated by Spank plus the design and colour work of the Mana/Porirua T-shirts. Mana/Porirua looked smart and impressive when turning up on mass at the Pool.

Friday night our last night at PNBHS was the awards night.  Thank you to Alison Pask and Sarah Tait for their organisation and Todd; who played MC for the night, he was funny and right on target with his comments.

Great support once again from the staff at PNBHS especially Vicky Rolls the matron, the cleaners and last but not least the cooks. The food on camp was plentiful (ask Hamish and Aaron) and perfect for the swimmers to be able to participate fully in training.

Thanks also to our sponsors Spank and Pub Charity, without which our Camp couldn’t have remained affordable.

Finally a big thank you to the Swimmers who worked hard and represented Mana/Porirua well; to the Management team Alison, Bill and Julie Walsh, Tania Donaldson, Sarah and Margriet Lynch for your overall support and working as a team with the swimmers and to the coaches Nevill and Todd for the programme, encouragement, challenge and support for the swimmers.

Thanks also to Jacqui Watts-Pointer for this report and her work as Camp Manager bringing it all together.  It must have been a good one because the kids are still talking about it. (Editor)

Dates have been pencilled in at PNBHS and Lido for next year’s camp.  Bring it on!
